Stradbroke Island weekend - 28th and 29th March 2009
We had another great weekend with the club. Thank you very much to Gary and Pam for organizing the Stradbroke Island weekend. The weather was perfect except for a bit of heavy rain for those camping Friday night. We arrived Saturday with Bernie and Judy to join the rest of the group that had arrived Friday. The ferry ride from Cleveland over to Dunwich on “The Big Red” ferry was very comfortable. We camped at the Redland City Council Camping ground at Adder Rock. The camping ground was full as there was a father and son camp from one of the Brisbane boy’s schools there. The camping ground is just a short stroll from the beach a good spot and not far from the Stradbroke Island Hotel, Bowls club and Point Lookout. The facilities were good at the camp ground lots of shade. There was a good big covered area with Bar-B-Ques and taps for washing up. Good hot showers. Graham T had some trouble in the showers on Friday night. He walked into the shower cubicle got organized set everything up for his shower as you do. He turned on the taps to find that there was only cold water when he realized that you needed to press a button outside the cubicle to turn on the hot water. So after covering himself with a towel he went out to investigate to find Errol Gordon in the same predicament standing there without his glasses on trying to locate his hot shower button wearing nothing but lathered soap suds!!! To be a fly on the wall. On Saturday after we set up camp Gary didn’t waste any time to get the jobs organized for the weekend by getting us all to pick out a bit of paper out of a hat. I picked out the verbal!! Now I was more than happy to do the verbal but Errol really wanted to do it so I said, ‘alright then you can do it Errol.” I’ll swap and do the written instead. That is my story and I am sticking to it. On the Saturday we all set of for a drive with the group at about 10am. We got of the bitumen onto the council and mine lease roads. Jim lives on the Island so he knew the tracks well. The first hill proved to be a challenge. Everyone had to air down their tyres a little bit more. Bernie caught a huge spider and its web on his aerial which made itself back to camp with us. The guys had fun on couple of sand hills. There was a very steep hill called Telegraph Hill. The name of the hill suggests how steep the hill was like a Telegraph pole. Errol in his Red Pajero with his tyres down to 5 PSI got up there. Gary and Jim took us on some good tracks very scenic in spots. We stopped off up the top of another hill to take in the views. The view was fantastic. You could see across Moreton Bay, over to the Brisbane city skyline. We didn’t do any beach driving but spent our time on the lesser known inland tracks. We had lunch at Brown Lake did some more driving and then headed back for Happy hour. We enjoyed everyone’s contribution to the “Happy hour” festivities and had lots of laughs. Judy Dragona was hilarious with her stories. She was talking about tattoos and how a pretty butterfly tattoo turns into a bat as you grow older. You had to be there. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable time. Now on Mitsubishi trips there are always some antics. The theme of this weekend was John Veling couldn’t get it up so Errol tried to help him!!! This made for an interesting weekend. John did struggle so Errol jumped in next to John to help and guide him. Errol was stroking John Veling’s gear box, pulling his lever, urging him on. “But he just won’t listen,” said Errol in frustration. Gary at one stage said to the both of them, “No fighting in the front seat.” Despite grit determination from Errol and a very willing student, John he just could not make it up the sand hill. Actually I believe there were two hills he had trouble with, requiring a snatch out of one. Anyhow better luck next time John. On Sunday morning after breakfast we headed off for another drive. Once back at camp we went for a swim and slowly packed up as our barge was booked for 4pm. A few of us headed up to Stradbroke Island hotel for lunch. We enjoyed our meal. We then went for a walk around the Point lookout cliff walk. Thank you again to Gary and Pam and the rest of the members from the club for a most enjoyable weekend. A thank you to Jim and Judy Dragona, members of the club that we don’t see so much for helping lead the trip. Minna Ludlow Back to Top
