The word must be out about the joys of camping at Moore
Park over Christmas because this year just about every site was taken. We had
plenty of room for all of our members with two tarps set up by the Pie Van under
the big fig tree where we enjoyed happy hour and several communal dinners.
Our mob started arriving on the Wednesday
and by Christmas day we had a total of 22 for breakfast and dinner. The day
kicked off around 8.00am with a full cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit, juices and
of course champagne. The day just sort of continued as we cooked a full roast
dinner with all the trimmings, lots of plum pudding and Margaret Stopplebein’s
fabulous black forest trifle with cherries, cream, chocolate and several secret
ingredients and it was delicious. Most had eaten themselves to a standstill by
the time we got around to the cheese and fruit platters.
The lead up to Christmas day was pretty
quiet. We did a bit of sightseeing, a bit of fishing and of course caught
nothing. On the Saturday night we all went to the local restaurant to celebrate
the wedding anniversaries of Eric and Helga and Gary and Gwen and on Sunday we
headed for the markets.
After that we decided that breakfast at one
of the many coffee shops in the main street would be the go and at one we were
offered the Bundy Thunder!! This was an absolute super size hamburger
with chips, and the deal was that if you could eat the lot your name would go on
the wall of fame. Suffice to say that the only taker was David and he did not go
the distance.
Eric ran a trip through the Watalgan State
Forest which just happens to end up at the Avondale Tavern where we had lunch.
Boxing Day and the rest of our crew arrived
and while they were getting set up the rest of us had a lay day doing absolutely
nothing. Spending time at the beach was quite popular as the water was very
warm. Bernie and Judy had a lot of fun zooming along the beach on their wind
sailers or whatever those contraptions are called.
On Monday Ross led a trip to the old
railway tunnel and Mount Perry and David led a trip to Turkey Beach and 1770. We
gave the Betsy Bomber a miss this year as it is a bit far for a day trip. Eric
led a trip to Kinkuna which included a brief stop at Woodgate, an ice cream at
Maminos and lunch at the Cordalba pub.
The next day Chris ran a trip to visit his
brother’s new tree farm and nursery at Bucca. This trip too finished up at the
Avondale pub for lunch. The following day there was a trip to Biggenden but the
temperature peaked at 43 so we did a slow tour of the town in the cars and then
headed for Childers to dine in the air-conditioned comfort of the Isis Club.
Problem was it was closed so we opted for the Apple Tree Creek pub instead.
Our New Year’s Eve party was a great
success with Ian providing the music which was good if you liked Johnny Cash and
Roy Orbison. Everyone made it to midnight although one or two had a wee lie down
midway. Who was it that turned up at happy hour in their night attire?
We didn’t get to do all the things we
planned to do as we simply ran out of time, but anyway it gives us something to
do next year. We had around 50 people this year and everyone agreed they had a
most relaxing and enjoyable time. So much so that virtually everyone re-booked
their sites for next year. If you are planning to go to Moore Park for 2009 it
is advisable to book a site as soon as possible as there weren’t any powered
sites left this year since nearly everyone these days has a nanavan.
